TCF Inaugurates Natural Dye Laboratory - DATU
TCF established the Natural Dye Research and Development Laboratory – DATU, one of the world’s most advanced laboratories in Istanbul, with generous support from ARMAGGAN. The mission of DATU is to help preserve and promote Turkey’s textile heritage by creating a scientific inventory of natural dyes, which have been used for centuries in Turkish textiles. DATU will also contribute to the redevelopment of the natural dye production process, as well as spreading the use of natural dyes in contemporary textile production.
TCF Turkish Art and Culture Lecture Istanbul Series Begins
The TCF Istanbul office launched its 2010-11 lecture series this month and will feature 14 lectures by renowned experts and scholars. The lectures aim to introduce the rich cultural and artistic heritage of Turkey to members of the consular corps, foreign faculty members and the expatriate community at large residing in Istanbul. The program, as well as videos of past lectures, can be viewed online at the TCF website.
In the US, the TCF Turkish Art and Culture Lecture Series will feature speaking tours by two renowned experts on Turkish history, culture and art. Mesut Ilgim, an expert on Turkish-Jewish history and the Turkish educational system, will speak in New York and Detroit on the “Educational Contributions of German-Jewish Professors in Turkey;” Serif Yenen, a specialist on travel to Turkey and author of “Turkish Odyssey,” will speak at the Smithsonian Institution on “Topkapi Palace: The Luxe Life, Sultan Style,” as well as in New York, Philadelphia and Boston. The lectures are organized in collaboration with the American Turkish Society, Turkish American Cultural Association of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania Museum and Boston University.
TCF at SOFA Chicago
TCF is gearing up for the Sculpture Objects and Functional Art-SOFA Chicago exposition on November 5-7, 2010. The TCF sponsored booth at SOFA will feature Yasemin Aslan Bakiri, Gamze Araz Eskinazi & Yasemin Sayinsoy, Yucel Kale and Seckin Pirim. This year, participating Turkish artists will also be giving booth talks on Turkish art to visitors. This is the fourth year of TCF sponsorship of Turkish contemporary artists at the SOFA fairs.
Turkish Festival Season in Full Gear
The Turkish Cultural Foundation has provided major grants to support Turkish festivals in Boston, organized by the Turkish American Cultural Society of New England, in Dallas, organized by the Turkish American Association of North Texas, in Lauderdale, organized by the Florida Turkish American Association and in Houston, organized this upcoming weekend by the American Turkish Association of Houston. TCF Sponsors Turkish Film Festivals
A major TCF grant to Moon and Stars Project will bring Turkish films to cinema audiences in several US cities. Since 2005, this collaborative effort between Moon and Stars Project and TCF has enabled the screening of Turkish films featured at the annual New York Turkish Film Festival and at film festivals around the country by local Turkish American associations. This year, various films screened at the 12th New York Turkish Film Festival will also be featured at the 4th Milwaukee Turkish Film Festival, the 6th Madison Turkish Film Festival, the Contemporary Turkish Cinema Festival at Cornell and during Seattle TurkFest. TCF Fall2010 Cultural Tour Ends
TCF’s Fall2010 Cultural Tour took 36 influential American guests from different walks of life, ranging from academia, art, politics, civil society to the media, on a cultural journey through Turkey. The tour visited Istanbul, Edirne, Canakkale, Gelibolu (Gallipoli), Truva (Troy), Bursa, Iznik, Beypazari, Ankara, Amasya, Tokat, Sivas, Kayseri, Cappadocia and Konya. TCF tours provide participants with an in-depth exposure to the history, art, culture, architecture, food and music, as well as the people of Turkey.
