TCF 2011 Fall Cultural Tour Update
TCF's 2011 Cultural Tour is scheduled to take place on September 12-29, 2011. The first leg of the tour (September 12-29) will take participants to Istanbul and explore the Marmara region, while the second leg of the tour (September 20-29) will travel through Central Anatolia. The tour will take influential Americans from different walks of life as guests of TCF on an intensive itinerary highlighting the culture, cuisine, history, art, architecture and natural beauty of Turkey. TCF Turkish Art and Culture Lectures in the US
TCF Turkish Art and Culture Lecture Series will feature Dr. Nurhan Atasoy, TCF Senior Scholar in Residence, who will be speaking at the Turkish Embassy in Washington, DC, Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, Houston Museum of Fine Art, Case Western University and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. TCF Istanbul Lectures
The TCF Istanbul Lectures featured two prominent speakers in March. Dr. Iskender Pala of Istanbul Kultur University spoke on March 3 on the topic of “Sultans of Poetry.” Dr. Halil Selcuk Gurisik of Sabanci University lectured on March 4, exploring contemporary perspectives and applications of felt, a traditional Anatolian cultural product. TCF Awards Grant to Turkish-American Art Society of New York
A TCF major grant will bring theater, music and fun to students in a series of free performances at 15 New York area public schools of “Flying Man,” an original children’s music play produced by TAASNY. The play was also performed for Turkish American children three times at the Lighthouse International Theater in New York.
TCF Sponsors Turkish Women's League of America Fashion Show
TCF has provided a major grant to the Turkish Women's League of America in New York to celebrate International Women's Day with a premier fashion show by Turkish couture designer Mehmet Koymen, on March 17, 2011 Mr. Koymen will showcase an extravagant women's collection inspired by the splendor of the Ottoman Empire and portray the evolution of Turkish women's clothing leading up today's modern fashion. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Ataturk School, the oldest Turkish American school in the country.
TCF Grant Supports 3rd Annual Nazim Hikmet Poetry Festival
For the third year, a major TCF grant will support the organization of the 3rd Annual Nazim Hikmet Poetry Festival organized by the American Turkish Association of North Carolina. The Festival will be held on April 17, 2011 at Page Walker Arts & History Center in Cary, NC and celebrate the life and poetry of Nazim Hikmet, regarded widely as the greatest Turkish contemporary poet. A poetry competition precedes the festival, whose finalists will be invited to read their poetry at the Festival alongside other noted poets. The festival will feature Murat Nemet-Nejat, poet and one of the leading translators of modern Turkish poetry into English.
