TCF Supports Sinop Kale Exhibition in New York City
TCF provided a grant to support a second exhibition of Stone Sounds: Echoes from 4,000 Years at Sinop Kale (Sinop Fortress) at the Explorer’s Club in New York City. The exhibition was displayed at the Explorer’s Club during the beginning of May, and was highlighted by Sinop Festival 2017 on May 4 with an evening of food, music, and film inspired by Sinop’s rich history. The exhibition explores the history of the fortress of Sinop, a historical and archaeological site on the Black Sea coast of Turkey. Through the use of images and sound recordings from Sinop and the excavations at the fortress, the exhibition allow viewers to experience the history of an important port in the Black Sea/Eurasian world. The exhibit was created and produced by artists Sven Anderson and Erkan Akliman, and the Sinop fortress excavations are led by Dr. Owen Doonan of California State University Northridge and Dr. Alex Bauer of Queens College of the City University of New York.
TCF Participates in UNESCO Turkey National Commission Conference
TCF Executive Director Güler Köknar gave a presentation on the mission and work of TCF at a conference organized by the UNESCO Turkish National Commission in Ankara on May 31. The event was held as a networking and information sharing session with various NGO's in areas that fall under the UNESCO mission area, specifically aimed at exploring areas of cooperation under UNESCO's "2030 Sustainable Development Goals." TCF has been in official relations with UNESCO since 2015.
TCF-DATU Update
Dr. Recep Karadağ and Ms. Emine Torgan of TCF’s Cultural Heritage Preservation and Natural Dyes Project participated in the “2nd International Natural Dyeing Symposium” at Akdeniz University in Antalya on May 10-12 and gave two presentations entitled “Reproduction of Ottoman silk brocades and the importance of natural dyes” and “Sustainability and the use of natural dyes on modern textiles: Armaggan Collection.”
In addition, Dr. Recep Karadağ and Ms. Emine Torgan participated in the “39th International Symposium on Excavations, Surveys and Archaeometry” at Merinos Atatürk Congress Culture Centre in Bursa on May 22-26. Their presentations were entitled “Investigation of archaeological remains from different materials and periods with instrumental methods of analysis” and “Archaeometric examination of Dascyleum textile remains and comparisons with textile samples found in other excavations.”
Turkish Story Time Program
Makam New York's program Turkish Story Time, supported by a TCF grant, continues to present weekly programs in New York City. Turkish Story Time brings children and their caregivers together to learn about Turkish culture through reading stories in Turkish, learning songs, rhymes, and riddles, introducing instruments and advancing literacy. The program is recorded the first Saturday of every month at 4:00 pm at Book Culture on Columbus in New York City and is open to the public. The recordings, stories and materials are available on Makam New York’s website.
Cellist, composer, improviser, and photographer Anıl Eraslan (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2014) held a concert with Kemik Trio in Duisburg, Essen, Köln, and Berlin, Germany from May 2-25. On May 26, he performed with Kemik Trio, Yuko Oshima, and Frantz Loriot at WIM and on May 28, he presented a solo concert at Wunderkammer-Glattpark in in Zurich, Switzerland.
Esra Sağlık (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow - 2015) participated in the “II. International Symposium of Philosophy, Education, Arts and History of Science” where she presented on “New Media Aesthetics in Art Education" at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University in Turkey from May 3-8.
Swiss Ceramics represented Ceramist İpek Kotan's (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow 2014 and 2016) works at the “Revelations - International Fine Craft and Creation Biennial” in Paris from May 3-8.
Dr. Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2012) a composer, singer, performer, and scholar, participated in the “Chanting the Word of God” symposium and gave a concert with his group Dünya at Northeastern University in Boston, USA on May 8.
Dr. Ahmet Yaşar (TCF Academic Fellow-2008) participated in the “International Symposium on Ottoman Istanbul - V” and presented his paper entitled "Çakmakçılar Yokuşu: Osmanlı İstanbul’unun Ticari Bölgesi İçin Yeni Bir Mevki, 1650-1850 [Çakmakçılar Ramp: A New Locus for Istanbul’s Commercial Space, 1650 - 1850]" at İstanbul 29 Mayıs University on May 19-21.
Composer Hakan Ulus (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2014) attended the Berlin Academy of Arts’ “Berlin Stipend 2017” and gave a presentation on his music as a fellow of the Berlin Stipendiary, Academy of Arts in Berlin, Germany on May 4. He also participated in “250 Piano Pieces for Beethoven - International Composition project by Susanne Kessel “ and performed a “World Premiere of Alaq II (2017)” at Haus der Luft - und Raumfahrt in Bonn, Germany on May 22. In İstanbul, he gave a presentation on his music and contemporary music in Germany at Mimar Sinan University on May 23.
Contemporary artist Sümer Sayın (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2014) presented her works at the "Yarın" exhibition organized by Plato Sanat at Gaia Gallery in İstanbul, Turkey on May 3-6. She also showcased her work at Elgiz Museum as one of the recipients of the Rotary Art Prize on May 25. The exhibition will remain open until June 11.
