TCF Extends Applications for UNESCO-Japan Prize

TCF is extending the deadline to accept applications from individuals and entities in the United States and in Turkey for the UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development to April 6. Only applications that comply with the Prize selection criteria will be evaluated for nomination. Applications and supporting material must be sent to TCF_UNESCO@turkishculture.org.

TCF DATU Update

Prof.Recep Karadağ, Head of the TCF Cultural Heritage Preservation and Natural Dyes Laboratory (DATU) has been invited to speak a variety of scientific conferences to share the work undertaken at DATU on natural dyes and historical preservation.

He is scheduled to speak at the 8th International Istanbul Textile Conference on April 14-16 and will present on “Reproduction of the Ottoman Palace Fabrics Using Natural Dyes” and “Multidirectional Investigation of Organic Cotton Fabrics Dyed with Gall Oak.” Prof. Karadağ will also address the Heritage Istanbul Restoration, Archaeology, Museum Technologies Fair and Conferences on April 12-14 with a presentation on “The Importance of Analysis for Cultural Heritage.” On May 7, he will give two presentations on “Pigment Analysis of the Kanlıtaş Mount Excavation Findings” and “Archaeometric Investigations of Archaeological Textile Works and Storage Conditions” in Canakkale, Turkey. He will address the 4th International Conference on Engineering and Natural Sciences in Kiev, Ukraine on May 2-6 with a presentation on "Provided Antimicrobial Properties and Dyeing of Organic Cotton Products with Natural Dyes (Madder and Gall Oak).” Finally, Prof. Karadağ will deliver a keynote presentation at The Fiber Society’s 2018 Spring Conference in Tokyo on June 12-14 on  “Developing a Natural Dyeing Method for Obtaining Turkey Red Color.”

New TCF Fellow

The TCF Cultural Exchange Fellowship was awarded this month to Gülfidan Özmen (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2014), who has been selected for a 3 months residency fellowship at the Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center and the Creative Glass Center of America in Millville, New Jersey. During her fellowship, Ms. Özmen, an independent glass artist, will have the opportunity to create and exhibit new works, as well as interact with other artists.

TCF Fellows Update

Grammy nominated composer, singer, performer, and scholar Dr. Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2012 and TCF Grantee-2017) premiered a new composition for jazz orchestra, entitled “Temmuz”, at "The Legacy of Bob Brookmeyer" concert on March 1 at the New England Conservatory in Boston, where he was also the featured soloist.

Oud virtuoso Mehmet Polat (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2016) held a series of concerts in Dordrecht, Hangelo, Amsterdam, Alkmaar and Haarlem, Netherlands in March and Mehmet Polat Trio also held a concert at the Amsterdam Jazz Festival on March 17.

Cellist, composer, improviser, and photographer Anıl Eraslan (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2014) held a solo concert in İstanbul on March 3. His concert series continued in Berlin with Taner Akyol & Antonis Anissegos on March 9. He also performed with Sousta Politiki at Festival Pâquson in Zurich on March 29.

Roberley Bell (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2015) held an exhibition entitled "Objects and Color" at the Black and White Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. The exhibition will remain open until April 1, 2018. Roberley Bell’s project “Still Visible After Gezi,” a photo documentation of a walking project which spanned from 2010 to 2015, was included in the exhibition “Wanderlust” at Des Moines Art Center, Des Moines, Iowa on February 17 – March 13.

Banu Özden (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2018) participated in “Food Design Talks” and spoke about “Street Vendors and Design” at Gallery Area in İstanbul on March 17.

Poet and playwright Nurduran Duman (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2016) participated in the 2018 UNESCO Istanbul Festival - World Poetry Day on March 21-22. UNESCO World Poetry Day 2018 was celebrated with events at Bahçeşehir University with the participation of poets from around the world.

Heidi K. Brandow (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2015) gave an artist lecture and presentation in Istanbul on March 16 on "(in)dispensable,"  a photo and film based social engagement art project that highlights the lives of individuals actively employed in the solid waste industry.
