TCF at SOFA New York

For the fourth year, TCF participated in the Annual International Exposition of Sculpture Objects and Functional Art (SOFA Expo) in New York. Selected from among a large number of applicants, Malik Bulut, Emel Vardar, Ilker Yardimci and Yilmaz Zenger represented Turkish modern art at the exposition. The Turkish Cultural Foundation's showcase of Turkish art at SOFA reflects the Foundation's mission to expand international opportunities for Turkish artists, as well as promoting Turkish art.

TCF Lectures on Turkish Culture and Art

Prof. Dr. Nurhan Atasoy, Senior Scholar in Residence at TCF, spoke in Mount Vernon, Seattle and New York, as part of the TCF Turkish Art and Culture Lecture Series. Dr. Atasoy lectured at the World Tulip Conference in Mount Vernon, Washington and at the American Turkish Society in New York. Dr. Atasoy also delivered a keynote address at the Turkish and Ottoman Studies Graduate Student Conference at the University of Washington.
A companion lecture series is organized by the TCF Istanbul office and primarily geared toward the city's English-speaking residents. Recent lectures in Istanbul presented Prof.Dr. Nurhan Atasoy who spoke on “Dolmabahce Palace and the Ottoman Traditional Lifestyle” on May 5, Dr. Miyuki Aoki Girardelli on “On Horseback Across Eurasia: Ottoman Architectural Environment through the Eyes of Japanese Architect Ito Chuta” (Year of Japan 2010 Special Lecture) on April 2 and Dr. Aysel Cotelioglu on the “Painting Collection at Topkapi Palace” on April 1.

TCF announces 2010 Fellows

Nine young scholars received the 2010 TCF Fellowship for studies toward their Ph.D. dissertation, while five Fellowships were awarded to senior scholars for post-doctoral level research on Turkish culture and art. The TCF Fellowship Program was established in 2007 to provide support to students, researchers and scholars who have an interest in the art and culture of Turkey and studies related to the preservation of Turkey’s artistic and cultural heritage. Since its launch, the TCF Fellowship has been awarded to 38 scholars.

TCF sponsors Uluumay Museum Collection

Supported by a grant under Turkish Cultural Foundation’s Turkish Cultural Heritage Preservation and Documentation program, the Uluumay Ottoman Attire and Jewelry Museum in Bursa has created the first collection of religious garb worn by Greek Orthodox, Armenian Catholic, Assyrian, Jewish and Muslim denominational clergy during the Ottoman Empire. The collection brings to life the tradition of religious tolerance that has existed in Anatolia for centuries under Turkish and Ottoman imperial rule, featuring religious garments from the vast geography of the former Ottoman Empire.

Sezen Aksu performs in the US

Over 8,000 fans from across the United States came to listen to famous Turkish pop star Sezen Aksu who performed three concerts in the United States on April 4-7, 2010. Sponsored by the Turkish Cultural Foundation, the tour featured concerts at Strathmore Concert Hall in Maryland, Carnegie Hall in New York and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, New Jersey. Sezen Aksu was also interviewed by National Public Radio and the concerts were widely covered by the Turkish media.

TCF sponsors 1st Children’s Friendship Festival in Seattle

The 1st Children’s Friendship Festival featuring singing, dancing, and musical performances by Turkish children's groups, as well as groups representing other countries from around the world was organized in honor of the April 23rd International Children's Day by Turkish Cultural Association of Washington.


TCF sponsors Turkish artists in the US

Under its mission to expand international art opportunities for Turkish artists, Dr. Sezen Özeke of Uludag University, Bursa and Ruhi Özeke, Oud player, received grants to teach Turkish classical music and dance to undergraduate music students in DeKalb and Northern Illinois University and to perform at the “Spring World Music Concert” in DeKalb on April 9-11, 2010.

TCF Cultural Tour guest lectures on “Culture through Cuisine”

Sheilah Kaufman, a cooking instructor, food writer and lecturer presented Turkish cuisine at an event organized by the Seattle World Affairs Council. Titled “Culture Through Cuisine,” the event featured a discussion on the history and diversity of Turkish cuisine and was followed by a cooking demonstration. Sheilah is co-author of “A Taste of Turkish Cuisine” and visited Turkey last fall as a guest on the TCF Cultural Tour. For more information on Turkish Cuisine, please visit here.

Nazim Hikmet Poetry Festival Celebrated

Supported by a grant from the Turkish Cultural Foundation, the American Turkish Association of North Carolina organized the 2nd Nazim Hikmet Poetry Festival on April 18. The festival featured an International Poetry Competition, which received over 500 poem submissions from 175 poets from North Carolina to Malta. TCF Sponsors Philadelphia Turkish Festival

Supported by a grant from the Turkish Cultural Foundation, the 2nd Philadelphia Turkish Parade and Festival took place on May 1 in downtown Philadelphia. Organized by a joint committee of local Turkish American organizations in Pennsylvania, the festival was a celebration of Turkish culture, music, dance and food.

Vassar College Receives TCF Grant

TCF has awarded a grant to support Turkish Language Education at Vassar College as part of the College's Self-Instructional Language Program in 2010-2011. The program will allow students to learn Turkish at Vassar, which currently does not feature a Turkish language program.

TCF sponsors Staging of Turkish Play

The University of Maine received a grant from the Turkish Cultural Foundation to stage "Ambling Riders" (Rahvan Giden Atlilar) a play by leading Turkish playwright Ozen Yula. The play was translated into English and directed by Irem Secil Reel, a Turkish American graduate student at the University of Maine, and staged on April 29-May 1 at the University's Black Box Theater to coincide with Mr. Yula lecture at the University and Turkish Day on campus.

Ataturk School in New York Receives TCF Grant

The Ataturk School of the Turkish Women’s League of America was awarded a TCF grant under the Turkish Cultural Foundation Turkish American Community Schools Grant Program. Since the program’s launch in 2005, TCF supported the establishment or expansion of 20 Turkish American community schools.
