TCF Grant Supports to Harvard University Summer School in Turkey

The Turkish Cultural Foundation has awarded a multi-year grant to the Intensive Ottoman and Turkish Summer School of Harvard University’s Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, located on the small Aegean island of Cunda in Ayvalik, Turkey.

The TCF grant will partly underwrite the school’s operational expenses, as well as provide student scholarships to international students and Turkish students enrolled at state universities who are accepted into the program. The program offers proficiency-based instruction in the reading and translation of Ottoman materials in printed and manuscript form. It is designed to develop students' skills in paleography and their competence in working with original archival documents. The studies are augmented with classes in Persian and Arabic grammerfor Ottoman, as well as modern Turkish reading and conversation.

TCF Grant Supports Music Education

Since 2007, the Foundation has been a supporter of the Eyup Music Foundation , one of the oldest musical societies in Istanbul. The Eyup Music Foundation provides after-school music education to young children, as well as to adults in Turkish classical music. Located in the lower-income neighborhood of Eyup in historical Istanbul, TCF has helped the Foundation to expand its facilities, provide music education particularly to children who are unable to pursue a formal music education, as well as stage annual performances for its Senior and Junior choirs. In their last concert on May 30, the Foundation paid homage to Turkish classical music composer Muzaffer Ilkar. Now in its fourth year, the aim of the TCF supported concert series is to sustain interest in Turkish classical music in young generations and the general public.

Rochester Turkish Festival

The 15th Annual Turkish Rochester Turkish Festival will take place on June 11 – 13. Supported by a grant from the Turkish Cultural Foundation and organized by the Turkish Society of Rochester, the festival is a celebration of Turkish heritage in Rochester and of Turkish art, music, cuisine and culture.

Istanbulive 2 at Central Park

With support from the Turkish Cultural Foundation, Istanbulive II will take place on Saturday, July 3 from 2-7pm as part of SummerStage, a free celebration of art and culture at New York’s famed Central Park.

Istanbulive 2 will feature Turkish pop music performers and dance and is dedicated to the life and work of Arif Mardin, a Turkish American multi-Grammy Award winning producer, songwriter, and musician (1932 - 2006).

“Kesanli Ali Destani” to be staged in New York

The Turkish American Art Society of New York (TAASNY) will stage “Kesanli Ali Destani” (The Legend of Ali of Kesan), a famed Turkish theater play on June 22 at the Town Hall in New York. Supported by a grant from the Turkish Cultural Foundation, the play will be TAASNY’s third major production of a Turkish play to be staged in New York with the participation of renowned Turkish actors as well as a cast of dozens of amateur actors.

American Teachers to visit Turkey

The Turkish Cultural Foundation is getting ready to take 80 American teachers from all around the United States on its annual Teachers Study Tours to Turkey. The first group of teachers will leave for Turkey on June 28 to partake in a 13-day study tour organized and sponsored by TCF. With the three groups visiting Turkey this summer, a total of 295 teachers will have visited Turkey as part of the TCF Teachers Study Tours program. The study tours are part of a year-long partnership program between World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) and TCF which also includes teacher workshops on Turkey, as well as cultural programs on Turkey. Chicago Celebrates Turkish Festival

Supported by a grant from the Turkish Cultural Foundation and organized by the Turkish American Cultural Association of Chicago,the 8th Chicago Turkish Festival took place in downtown Chicago’s Daley Plaza on May 23-26. The festival delighted thousands with demonstrations of art, film, dance, music and gourmet food, where Chicagoans got the opportunity to celebrate, learn, and savor Turkish hospitality, culture, heritage and cuisine.

TCF Concludes Academia Cultural Tour

Organized under the Foundation’s People to People Cultural Exchanges Program, the Academia Cultural Tour brought 20 academic leaders from US educational institutions across the country on a 10-day tour to Turkey.
The tour program included meetings with Turkish universities to explore areas of cooperation and an intensive itinerary program that sought to enhance participants’ understanding about Turkish education, society and culture.

American Students Explore Turkish Art, Architecture and Fashion

A group of 12 students from Woodbury University in California visited Turkey from May 10-28, as part of a course entitled "Cordoba to Istanbul and Beyond: Art, Architecture and Apparel."

Sponsored by a grant from the Turkish Cultural Foundation, the 17 day tour took students to Bursa, Canakkale and Istanbul, exploring the aesthetic, cultural and historical context of Turkish art, as well as exchanges with past and contemporary culture.

Community College of Philadelphia Visits TCF Istanbul Office

The Turkish Cultural Foundation’s Istanbul Office hosted 6 students and two faculty members from Community College of Philadelphia on May 11, 2010.

The students were visiting Turkey as part of a study tour and were given a lecture on Ottoman Gardens by Prof. Dr. Nurhan Atasoy, TCF Senior Scholar in Residence.

New Lecture Videos Uploaded on TCF Portal

The TCF Istanbul Lecture Program featured two lectures on Turkish culture last month. The lectures by Dr. Nurhan Atasoy, Senior Scholar in Residence at TCF on “Dolmabahce Palace and the Ottoman Traditional Lifestyle” and by Dr. Minako Mizuno Yamanlar of Ryukoku University on “Ottoman Arts and Japanese Arts: Some Aesthetic Similarities” can now be viewed online.
